Our Founding Story

Girls Tech Founding Story

My name is Dativah Mukamusonera, and I was born into a family where boys were always prioritized over girls. Growing up in rural Rwanda, I witnessed firsthand the stark inequalities that girls face, particularly when it comes to education.

In my community, the belief that boys’ education was more valuable than girls' was ingrained in the culture, and it was a reality I could not escape. I was expected to take care of the home while my brothers were encouraged to pursue their studies. However, this unequal treatment became a deeply personal experience when my father passed away.

At just 13 years old, my world was turned upside down. While my brothers continued their education without hesitation, I was forced to drop out of school. Suddenly, the dream of achieving an education seemed impossible for me.

It was a moment that shattered my aspirations and left me feeling helpless, as though my future had been predetermined by circumstances beyond my control. But even in the midst of this despair, I refused to accept that my story was over.

I knew that I had the potential to achieve great things, that I was worth just as much as my brothers, and that my dreams were valid. With that belief, I gathered the courage to approach the local government and ask for support.

It was not an easy decision, and the path was full of obstacles, but I persisted. I fought for my right to an education. I made my voice heard, despite the many challenges that came my way.

After a long and difficult struggle, I finally succeeded in receiving the support I needed to return to school.

This experience was a turning point in my life. I not only completed my education, but I also learned a powerful lesson about resilience, perseverance, and the importance of standing up for oneself.

Yet, even as I celebrated my victory, I was deeply aware of the countless other girls in rural Rwanda who were still being overlooked, denied the opportunity to pursue their education, and left behind simply because they were born girls.

I founded Girls Tech Ventures with a clear mission: to create opportunities for girls in rural Rwanda to access education, particularly in technology, STEM, and entrepreneurship. In addition to my personal story, there’s another reason I focused on technology. I never had the chance to develop tech skills myself.

Growing up in a rural area, access to technology and digital tools was limited, and it wasn’t even seen as important for girls. But I knew, even back then, that technology could open doors to a future that wasn’t available to me.

This lack of opportunity for girls in tech is still a reality in many parts of rural Rwanda, and I wanted to change that.

The importance of technology became even clearer during the COVID-19 pandemic. When schools shut down and much of the world moved online, many girls in rural areas were left behind.

They didn’t have access to the internet, devices, or the digital skills needed to continue learning.

The pandemic exposed the deep digital divide, and it highlighted the urgent need for girls to have access to technology. Without it, they are at risk of falling further behind in education and missing out on opportunities that could change their lives.

This is why Girls Tech Ventures focuses so heavily on technology. It’s not just about giving girls the skills to navigate the digital world—it’s about giving them the tools to succeed in life.

By equipping girls with technology and STEM skills, we are preparing them for a future where these abilities will be essential in nearly every field. We are empowering them to compete in the global economy, to innovate, and to create solutions that can transform their communities.

For me, Girls Tech Ventures is more than just an organization—it is a movement to redefine what is possible for girls in rural Rwanda.

My story may have started with personal struggle, but it has grown into a story of empowerment, transformation, and hope for every girl who dares to dream beyond the limitations society imposes on her.

Together, we are building a future where every girl has the chance to rise, thrive, and become a leader in her own right, and where no girl is left behind due to a lack of technology or opportunity.
